You reach into your pocket. The key is gone.
Did you drop it? Did you leave it in a cafe? Or did someone lift it from your pocket?
If you drive a highly desirable car like a Toyota RAV4 or a Lexus RX, you cannot afford to wait and see. If that key is in the hands of a thief, they can drive your car away in seconds.
But here is the good news.
Modern car keys are not just metal blades. They are digital credentials. Just like you can cancel a lost bank card, we can cancel a lost car key.
If you need to delete stolen car keys from your vehicle’s memory, we can perform a Digital Block. Once we do this, the stolen key becomes nothing more than a useless piece of plastic. It will not start the engine.
The ‘Digital Block’: How We Wipe the Memory
You do not need to take the car apart to secure it.
We use the same diagnostic software as the main dealer (Techstream). We plug our laptop into the OBD port of your Toyota or Lexus. We access the vehicle’s “Allow List”.
On the screen, we can see exactly how many keys are programmed to your car.
- Key 1: In your hand (Safe).
- Key 2: In your spare drawer (Safe).
- Key 3: Missing (Danger).
We simply select “Key 3” and hit delete.
We then re-pair your remaining keys to the car. The security coding is scrambled and reset.
If the thief returns tonight and presses the “Unlock” button on the old key, nothing happens. If they break in and try to press the Start button, the dashboard will say Key Not Detected.
The Dealer Myth: ‘You Must Change All Locks’ (£1,500)
If you call a Toyota or Lexus dealer, they might try to sell you the “Full Security Package”.
They will suggest changing every lock barrel on the car. The door lock, the ignition (if keyed), and even the glovebox. They will quote you £1,500 or more.
They do this because they want to sell parts. But do you actually need it?
Here is the reality.
If we perform a Digital Block, the stolen key acts like a “dumb” metal blade. Yes, the thief can physically insert the blade into the door lock and turn it.
However: On almost all modern Toyota and Lexus models (2018 onwards), turning the mechanical lock without the digital chip being present will trigger the factory alarm immediately.
The horn will blare. The lights will flash. The engine will remain immobilised.
Is it worth paying £1,500 just to stop the mechanical blade from turning? For most people, the answer is no.
The ‘Re-Tumble’ Solution (The Middle Ground)
There is one exception.
If your keys were stolen along with your wallet or ID, the thief knows your address. You might be terrified that they will come back and physically open the door, even if the alarm goes off.
You still do not need to pay the dealer £1,500.
We offer a “Lock Re-Tumble” service.
We do not replace the entire metal lock housing. Instead, we remove the lock barrel and change the tiny brass pins inside it. We change the combination. We then cut a new blade for your existing key fob to match the new combination.
The old stolen key will not even fit in the hole. This costs closer to £200, not £1,500.
RAV4 & Lexus Owners: The Specific Threat
We are seeing a spike in thefts of Toyota RAV4s and Lexus RX models in London. These cars are often targeted by organised gangs.
If you lose a key for one of these vehicles, you must assume it was stolen, not lost.
Leaving a “live” key floating around is a massive risk. Your insurance company may also refuse to pay out if the car is stolen using a valid key that you failed to delete.
Do not take the risk. Wipe the memory today.
FAQ: Blocking Stolen Keys
Can I block a stolen car key from working? Yes. We can access the car’s ECU and delete the unique digital ID of the missing key. The key will no longer unlock the car remotely or start the engine.
How much does it cost to reprogram a Toyota key? The cost to “Block” lost keys and reprogram your existing ones is significantly cheaper than the main dealer. Prices typically start from a standard call out fee plus programming time.
Do I need to change my locks if I lost my car keys? Not necessarily. A digital block prevents the car from starting. We only recommend changing the physical locks (or re-tumbling them) if you believe the thief knows your home address and might try to access the cabin physically.
