Snapped Key in Ignition? Why Superglue Will Cost You £300 (And How We Fix It for Less)

It is the moment every driver dreads.

You are late for work. You jump in the car. You turn the key quickly.

Snap.

Suddenly the resistance is gone. You look at your hand and see only half a key. The other half is the jagged metal blade. It is buried deep inside your ignition barrel.

If you are parked on a quiet driveway, this is annoying. If you are parked on a Red Route on the A13 or the A11 in East London, this is an emergency.

Your instinct is to panic. You might be reaching for a tube of superglue.

Stop.

Put the glue down. You are about to turn an £80 extraction job into a £300 ignition replacement.

Here is the professional guide to handling a snapped key without ruining your car.

The Golden Rule: The ‘Flush Test’

Before you do anything, you need to look closely at the ignition lock. Use your phone torch.

We use a simple rule to decide if a key can be removed easily: The 5mm Rule.

  • Scenario A: Sticking Out. If the broken piece of metal sticks out more than 5mm from the lock face, you might be able to grab it. If you have a pair of needle-nose pliers, you can try to gently pull it straight out. Do not twist. Just pull.
  • Scenario B: The Danger Zone. If the metal is flat against the lock face, or buried inside the hole, do not touch it.

If the key is buried, you cannot grip it. If you try to poke it with a screwdriver or a paperclip, you will push the blade deeper. Once it goes past the rear wafer, it locks into position.

The ‘Superglue Mistake’: Why DIY Fails

We see this every week in Tower Hamlets. A driver tries to glue the two halves of the key back together while the blade is still in the lock.

It seems logical, but it does not work.

Superglue is a very thin liquid. It flows into small gaps like water.

When you apply glue to the key, it does not just bond the metal. It flows into the tiny springs and brass wafers inside the ignition barrel. Within seconds, it hardens.

The result? The broken key sticks to the ignition cylinder. The lock is seized forever.

We cannot extract a glued key. We have to drill out the entire ignition housing and replace the lock. This costs upwards of £300, plus the cost of new keys.

Vehicle Specifics: Ford & Vauxhall Vulnerabilities

Certain cars in East London are more prone to this than others.

Ford Transit & Fiesta (The Tibbe Key)

Older Fords use a “Tibbe” key which looks like a nail. The handle contains a glass chip (4D63). This glass tube holds your immobiliser code. If you try to force a snapped Ford key, or use glue, you often crush the glass chip inside the head. Once that chip is broken, the car will never start again, even if we get the blade out.

Vauxhall Corsa & Astra (The Flip Key)

Vauxhall flip keys are known for the “Blade Drop.” The metal hinge snaps, and the blade falls out. Warning: The remote locking circuit board is inside the head. If you cover the head in superglue trying to reattach the blade, you will destroy the circuit board. You will ruin the remote central locking forever.

The Secret Money Saver: ‘The Transplant’

This is why you call a professional. We don’t just pull the key out. We save you money on the replacement.

A car key has two parts:

  1. The Blade: A cheap piece of metal.
  2. The Chip: An expensive computer that talks to your engine.

When your key snaps, the expensive chip is usually still safe in the plastic handle.

We use a process called The Transplant.

  1. Extraction: We use specialist “Spiral Extractors” which are tiny corkscrew tools. We grip the broken blade from the inside and pull it out without damaging the lock.
  2. Harvesting: We take your old plastic handle and carefully remove the Transponder Chip and the remote board.
  3. Transplant: We cut a brand new metal blade and insert your old chip into a new shell.

The Result: Because we reused your old chip, we do not need to charge you for programming. You save £50 to £100 compared to buying a completely new key from a dealer.

The East London Protocol

Living in London adds extra pressure.

  • Red Routes (A13/A11): If you are snapped on a Red Route, you do not have time to watch YouTube tutorials. Transport for London (TfL) cameras will issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) quickly. A tow truck costs more than our extraction fee.
  • Parking Zones: Leaving your car overnight in Shoreditch or Bethnal Green while you wait for a tool from Amazon is risky. The parking wardens are efficient.

Summary: What To Do Right Now

If you have just snapped your key:

  1. Do not use superglue.
  2. Do not poke it with a screwdriver.
  3. Do check the “Flush Test.”
  4. Do take a clear photo of the lock.

We can save the chip. We can save the lock. We can save you money.
